The Lore
The donair was brought to Halifax from greek immigrants in the mid 1970s. A Lebanese man by the name of Chawki El-Homeira opened his own shop and then followed Haligonian oil patch workers to Alberta in the early 80s, changing his name to Charles Smart. He opened the first donair shop in Alberta and established what would become the province's unofficial food for the last 4 decades.
